Ramadan
By Rabia Mahmood (9th grade)
Every year my family celebrates Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar calender and is a time of spirituality and getting closer to God. It is a time for prayer, self-reflection, family, and feasting!
For 30 blessed days, my family wakes up prior to sunset to eat, pray, and then fast all day. During the day, fasting helps me cleanse my heart and purify my soul. Come sunset, my family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins come together to break our fast with a date and a prayer. We then all sit together and enjoy a mini feast of samosas, pakoras, and various sweets. On the weekends, we go to our local mosque with our families and we all break fast together as a community.
Ramadan is an important aspect of my identity that it helps me stay connected with my beliefs, family, and my Muslim community.
