Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year

Maddie Lee (9th Grade)

Every year my family and I celebrate Lunar New Year. For the New Year we dress in red because it is a lucky color. In the morning my parents have my siblings and I leave the house through the back door and come back into the house using the front door and then we run around the house and go into every single room saying “Kung Hei Fat Choy!” which is a popular Lunar New Year greeting in Cantonese and translates to "Wishing you prosperity!" After we finish my family and I drive to my grandmother's house and spread good luck in her house too. Finally, we get to do the red envelopes. Each envelope has money. My younger brother, my older sister, and I take turns kneeling before our elders and telling them what we wish for them in the years to come. After that, the elders tell us their wishes for us and they give us the red envelopes. Afterwards, we have a lot of yummy food that my grandma prepares. This is always a really fun tradition and it is one of the events I look forward to each year.
