Hawaii for the Holidays

Hawaii for the Holidays

By Olivia Stevens (grade 9)

Every year since I was born, my family has flown to Oahu, Hawaii to spend the holidays. My mom was born and raised in Kailua, and she still has siblings on the island, although her parents have passed. We always have a big family dinner on Christmas night, which is normally the day we arrive, and throughout the rest of the trip we explore fun activities together.

These adventures include hiking, eating shave ice, malasadas, and more local food, going to the beach, our annual pickleball tournament, and so much more.

Hawaiian Sun (guava juice type drink), spam musubi, and mac salad- some of my favorite food!

We also make sure to visit my Popo and Gung Gung's (mom's parents) graves annually, to say hi and spend time with them.

Since we go to Hawaii once a year, therefore only see those family members once a year, we really value and cherish the time we spend there during winter break. Gift exchanges, hearty meals, and late nights filled with talking and laughter fill all of our hearts as we enjoy each other's presence.
